Begin your journey at the bustling Malé ferry terminal, where locals travel between their home islands and the capital. Watch everyday life unfold as people transport goods after a day of shopping, and enjoy the short 15-minute ferry ride to Villimalé. Don’t hesitate to speak with friendly locals—they’re always curious to hear where you’re from and how you’re enjoying the Maldives.

Villimalé, once a resort island and later a prison, was redeveloped to ease Malé’s growing population. Today, it offers a peaceful escape from the busy capital, featuring wide open streets, lush greenery, quiet beaches, and a relaxed island atmosphere that feels worlds apart from city life.

As you step onto Villimalé, you’ll get a glimpse of what Maldivian city islands looked like before rapid development. During your 60-minute guided walking tour, you’ll learn about the local lifestyle and discover how the community—alongside the NGO Save the Beach—works to protect the island and its surrounding ocean.

Gain insight into Maldivian ecosystems, conservation challenges, and the environmental impact of coastal development unique to small island nations. See firsthand the effects of land reclamation and harbor construction, identify native trees, and learn their Dhivehi names.

End your experience with traditional Maldivian evening tea at a beachfront café. Chat with your guide and an NGO representative about conservation, coral planting, waste management, and ongoing environmental efforts in the Maldives. Enjoy ‘hedhika,’ delicious local snacks served with black tea, and relax Maldivian-style as the sunset paints the sky—before returning to the vibrant capital.
