About this experience

Meet at the Villimalé Ferry Terminal at 09:30 and begin your journey with a short ferry crossing alongside local commuters traveling between Malé and Villimalé. This experience offers a rare chance to engage with everyday island life before arriving at Villimalé, a peaceful local island just minutes from the capital and known for its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful house reef.

On arrival, you’ll be welcomed by a marine expert from the local NGO Save the Beach, who will introduce you to the fundamentals of fish identification. Learn how to recognize key reef fish species and important indicator species that help scientists assess reef health. You’ll understand how each species contributes to the marine ecosystem and how your observations support citizen science and ongoing coral reef monitoring efforts.

After a safety briefing, you’ll be provided with snorkeling gear and fish identification materials before entering the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. As you snorkel the Villimalé house reef, you’ll record sightings and gain hands-on experience collecting real conservation data. This immersive activity combines snorkeling, education, and environmental stewardship, allowing you to actively contribute to the protection of the Maldives’ marine life while enjoying an unforgettable underwater experience.

We do provide snorkeling equipment on all our tours but please feel free to bring along your own mask and snorkel. Not only will you be assured your mask fits your face properly and is comfortable and less likely to have leakage, it will also lower any health associated risks. We find that peace of mind goes a long way.
